Synopsis…Welcome
to 1930s New York and the seedy rooms of an illegal gambling den
known as the Dead Cert Club. In a tale dripping with murder and
mystery we meet the ultimate femme fatale, Honey Black and the most
powerful man in the underworld of New York, Marcus Graves. We learn
what happened when they met and how it just might have led to the
creation of that masked scourge of the criminal classes... The Clock!
Thoughts…I
have read some of the adventures of the Clock in Shokwave and they
have always had a great tone to them. There is a sense of the time
with how it's all put together. The vocabulary used gives it that
real pulp 30s vibe. This story has noir feel to it, with a narrator
taking us through the story, giving us a glimpse at the big man
himself Marcus Graves and his first encounter with The Clock and why
he is so eager to keep his presence under wraps.
This
was a great story from start to finish. Straight away you get pulled
in and it does a great job of carrying us through as the narrator
weaves a tale of dames and gangsters. In the previous stories I have
read I can’t remember seeing Graves, only recall mentions of him
being the scary guy in charge and this really goes a long way to
showing just why he is not to be messed with for sure. This one shot
also does a great job of adding to the mythos of The Clock, is there
really a supernatural edge to it all, yes or no it all makes for some
great storytelling.
This
story had a real voice to it, as I was reading along I could hear the
words running through my head. This was helped in no small part by
the use of the likeness to famous people in the illustration. This
was used to great effect throughout the issue. Also the black and
white really added to that 30s feel of the whole thing.
If
you are thinking about backing this on Kickstarter, I would
wholeheartedly recommend adding the original book to the pledge as
well, or even go the whole hog and add the 6 issues of Shokwave as
well as not only will you get further adventure featuring The Clock
but also some other really awesome stories from John and other
collaborative artist as well.
